Inner Guru Yoga 12.-18. November 2022

The third stage of Tibetan spiritual practices

12.-18. November 2022

In the third week of Soul Month, 12.-18. November, we will undertake the Yuthok Nyingthik Heart Teachings, Inner Guru Yoga retreat, which requires previous completion of Outer Guru Yoga.

Teaching and explanation of Inner Guru Yoga will be given on the first day in ZOOM by a Tibetan yogi and Tibetan medicine instructor, line teacher Dr. Nida Chenagtsant’s personal student, Donla Tsering.

The focus of Inner Guru Yoga is on removing our inner (read about obstacles in the appendix of the text) obstacles, which are disturbing emotions, obsessions and wrong concepts, and discursiveness that tackles rational and logical thinking. In addition, it is the next powerful stage to build up the transformation of his mind, where the student reaches an inner transcending understanding of the identity, and sameness of his own and the teacher’s mind. The goal is a limitless understanding of the true nature of life and existence. The practice of Inner Guru Yoga includes visualization exercises typical of the previous stages along with mantras.

Yuthok Yönten Gonpo, the founder of this line of teachings from the 8th century, has said:

“If Yuthok Nyingthik (the supreme teaching of the Guru Sadhana Dharma cycle) did not have the boon for quick attainment, the people of this decadent age who are entangled in worldly desires and who are weak in their determination to go through long retreats would not be able to practice at all. But if this, my practice containing the essence of the realization of all life force is practiced by a deeply devoted person without interruption for seven days, then I promise to reveal my face to them and provide them with teachings and profound guidance.”

EXTERNAL, INTERNAL, AND SECRET OBSTACLES

EXTERNAL obstacles are problems from the outside world that prevent us from committing to spiritual development, distract our attention, and take away the opportunity to receive teachings and practice them. This can be mundane problems, family, the situation in the country, friends with different values, illnesses, too luxurious life that distracts the senses, uplifting hobbies and entertainment that seems attractive, which we constantly crave for more. External obstacles can be problematic, taking all our time and resources to fight them (money, relationships, life, diseases), but also pleasant, considering them important and relevant, perspective. Yet they all eat away minutes, days, and years of our precious human life, and ultimately, at the moment of death, we are the same or even more confused, scared, dependent, or embittered than we were at the beginning of our lives.

INTERNAL obstacles that cause us suffering and difficulties in dealing with spiritual practices are first of all strong emotions (lust, anger, attachment, envy, pride, etc.). Being caught up in these feelings hinders our development. An internal obstacle is considered a wrong concept. For this, there can be some kind of obsession in life, in which getting stuck and believing it to be true will lead us astray. Another form of internal obstruction is excessive discursivity — a logical, inferential way of thinking that prevents us from focusing on the object of meditation (our mind wanders and our mind power is scattered). A big obstacle in itself is laziness. Laziness finds all kinds of excuses to postpone practices, to do “more important” things, to postpone practices more and more and not to sit down for exercises at all. The roots of laziness lie in our wrong view. The

SECRET obstacle is related to spiritual practices: we have doubts about the teaching, lack of trust, and commitment to dharma (teaching). Due to these problems, there is no success in exercises, we leave spiritual practices secondary to life activities,  and we no longer consider them really important. The Dharma path becomes blurred and we become more and more secular. We lose our discipline, cheerful humor, and bright mind and pleasure independent of our circumstances. All obstacles are due to the conditions of our life and they can become fatal for us, but equally they can become conscious aids on the dharma path. One of the main antidotes to external, internal and secret obstacles is the Guru Yoga practices that follow the pre-exercises.
